The Velopace Butts Lane Hill Climb 2017
Saturday 14th October 2017 - 14:00 Start Time - The Wheatsheaf Inn, Willingdon BN20 9HP
The second edition of the Velopace Butts Lane Hill Climb was blessed with unseasonal autumn weather – kind to riders and volunteers alike – and made for another excellent event.
With encouragement from the MC at the half way point and thumping music all the way up the course, as well as cheering spectators, the riders flew into the climb as if there was no tomorrow (and certainly some said they wouldn’t be climbing the hill tomorrow).
With a highly competitive race between the fastest hill climbers, the course record was broken by 6 seconds by the defending champion, 1st placed Rowan Brackston of Imperial College Cycling Club with a storming time of 3m 32.8s. Almost unbelievably, (because it actually happened), there was a dead heat for 2nd place between last year’s 3rd place rider, Bill Bell from Bigfoot CC and Chris Newberry from Redhill CC in a time of 3m 41.3s.
Fastest lady, and defending her title was Joscelin Lowden from Lewes Wanderers CC in a time of 4m 15.6s, knocking 10s off her time from last year.
Our thanks go out to the people of Willingdon, especially those living on Butts Lane, Eastbourne Borough Council, The Wheatsheaf Inn and of course official race timekeepers Richard Meed and Pete Moon along with the volunteers and officials, without whom this event would not have been possible.
Well done to all riders and we look forward to seeing you again next year.
About the Butts Lane Hill Climb
The Velopace Butts Lane Hill Climb is an exciting new hill climb event in Willingdon near Eastbourne.
For those new to the sport, a hill climb involves riding a bicycle up a steep hill against the clock. Riders leave the start line at one minute intervals and ride up the hill as fast as possible.
It's that simple! Or is it? Pacing, equipment, power, weight and stamina all come into play to provide a spectacle like no other cycle race.
Butts Lane is a challenging, medium distance climb and has been crying out for hill climbers to take a timed run at it for years.
Limited to only 120 entries under CTT regulations, enter early as this event will be popular!
Great for Spectators
This event is ideal for spectators. Hill climbs attract cheering crowds who line the hill and encourage the brave riders to the top.
The event is free to watch. With The Wheatsheaf Inn as HQ there is food and drink available for the duration of the event and no doubt many riders
and spectators will make a night of it.
Your ascent of Butts Lane will not go unrewarded! Cash prizes for the fastest riders overall and in age and gender categories. Click here for the
full awards and prize list.
We've also teamed up with the ESCA Hill Climb at Firle Bostal, held on the morning of the 14th October, and are offering a cash prize of £50 to the fastest rider overall,
entering both events.
